As ‘twixt two equal armies fate<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Suspends uncertain victory,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Our souls (which to advance their state<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Were gone out) hung ‘twixt her and me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And whilst our souls negotiate there,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We like sepulchral statues lay;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
All day, the same our postures were,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And we said nothing, all the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If any, so by love refin’d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That he soul’s language understood,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And by good love were grown all mind,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Within convenient distance stood,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He (though he knew not which soul spake,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because both meant, both spake the same)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Might thence a new concoction take<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And part far purer than he came.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This ecstasy doth unperplex,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We said, and tell us what we love;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We see by this it was not sex,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We see we saw not what did move;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But as all several souls contain<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mixture of things, they know not what,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Love these mix’d souls doth mix again<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And makes both one, each this and that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A single violet transplant,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The strength, the colour, and the size,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
(All which before was poor and scant)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Redoubles still, and multiplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When love with one another so<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Interinanimates two souls,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That abler soul, which thence doth flow,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Defects of loneliness controls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We then, who are this new soul, know<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of what we are compos’d and made,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For th’ atomies of which we grow<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Are souls, whom no change can invade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But oh alas, so long, so far,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Our bodies why do we forbear?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They’are ours, though they’are not we; we are<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The intelligences, they the spheres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We owe them thanks, because they thus<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Did us, to us, at first convey,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yielded their senses’ force to us,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nor are dross to us, but allay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On man heaven’s influence works not so,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But that it first imprints the air;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So soul into the soul may flow,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Though it to body first repair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As our blood labors to beget<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Spirits, as like souls as it can,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because such fingers need to knit<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That subtle knot which makes us man,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So must pure lovers’ souls descend<\/p>\n\n\n\n
T’ affections, and to faculties,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Which sense may reach and apprehend,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Else a great prince in prison lies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To’our bodies turn we then, that so<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Weak men on love reveal’d may look;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Love’s mysteries in souls do grow,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But yet the body is his book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And if some lover, such as we,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Have heard this dialogue of one,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Let him still mark us, he shall see<\/p>\n\n\n\n
